Our Year 6 performed amazingly at the IPSHA State Speakers Challenge, with Mali receiving a silver medal, and Emily and Olivia receiving honourable mentions.
The students spoke about topics they were passionate about. “I spoke about having three wishes. I started off with simple things like doing the dishes, then progressed to more serious issues like world problems, conflict and poverty. I really wanted talk about something that made people realise what was actually happening in the world, and I was trying to think of how to deliver it,” said Mali.
“I spoke about how the internet affects our lives – it is an incredible tool, but, it does comes with risks. I am very passionate about the use of internet and technology, so I knew I had to speak about both sides of it,” explained Olivia.
Mali, who won second place, found the win to be a bit of a shock. “They were calling out names for winners, and when I did not hear mine at first, I did not think I would be called. It was pretty surprising!”
When asked if they had any advice to students thinking about participating in the future, Mali said, “Just go out there and do your best. I was so nervous, but when I got out there, I felt so good and proud of myself.”
Olivia agreed and said, “When you are up on that stage, you just have to pull it together and just do it, because it is such a great opportunity and such a great challenge.”
