Two of our Year 6 students have shone in the 2024 Australasian Problem-solving Maths Olympiad Junior Division, with recently released results placing them high in the Australasian rankings and highlighting the incredible work of our Primary staff leading our Extension programs!
Maths Olympiad is designed to develop increased creativity and flexibility in problem solving and mathematical reasoning, and stimulate students’ enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of, mathematics. This extremely difficult competition – undertaken by “the best of the best” in Kaleb’s words – sees participants tackle a series of mathematical challenges designed to showcase their skills and abilities. And what a showing they had! Kobe W achieved an exceptional result for the competition which places him the top 10% of students across Australasia, and Kaleb M’s result placed him in the top 25% of participants – a stellar achievement for these two bright sparks.
“Kobe and Kaleb’s impressive results in Maths Olympiad are a testament to their problem-solving skills, perseverance, and love of mathematics. They should be incredibly proud of their outstanding achievements and the dedication they have shown throughout this competition.” Mrs Rachel Cook, Academic Talent Development Coordinator (Primary).
While Kobe and Kaleb have an obvious passion for mathematics, we asked both boys how they felt about competing in such a big event and whether they placed any pressure on themselves to achieve high scores. “It’s not really that serious – it’s just about having fun!” said Kobe. “The questions are challenging at first when you look at them, but it’s all about trial and error,” said Kaleb, and both students expressed the view that the competition gave them a creative way to enjoy numbers and mathematical theory. We’re confident that this attitude will see their love of maths flourish, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish as they enter Year 7 next year!
