Although Ms Cathy Elliott is not a teacher, she is a staff member who is well known by many. Since joining our School community 10 years ago, she has worn many hats as a Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School staff member. Ms Elliott reflects on her experiences and highlights over the years.
I grew up in the picturesque Southern Highlands of New South Wales and have called Bunbury home for over 26 years. My early work history included completing my hairdressing apprenticeship and then working with the reception team at a boutique hotel in Bowral before moving to Bunbury.
After having my four children, I returned to work in the fashion industry then became a small business owner (family business) for eight years. I started at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School in 2011 and have recently become an authorised Marriage Celebrant.
My initial role at the School was two days a week as administration support for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Co-ordinator. This quickly became four days per week, encompassing all aspects of the VET office and the Round Square activities within Secondary School.
My position has evolved over the years to include working in Enrolments, Boarding Supervision, Human Resources administration, Primary administration along with being an Outward Bound supervising staff member (I have completed two Outward Bound treks!) and escorting/supervising students on international conferences for Round Square (when we could travel!)
It is hard to choose a favourite part of positions I have filled; it is rewarding seeing students flourish in the workplace and gain meaningful employment at the end of school through work placements I have facilitated over the years for them.
Seeing the personal growth and hearing about the experience of students who have participated in international exchanges and conferences over the years is another fulfilling aspect of my role.
Overall, getting to know the students over their final secondary years has always been a pleasure.
I have enjoyed getting to know colleagues in all areas of the School and internationally through Round Square along with the students, parents and business owners I liaise with on a weekly basis. These interactions have assisted with my own personal growth over the years.
Over the years I have been privileged to have had many opportunities in many areas: locally, Outward Bound was a major highlight and amongst the many Round Square opportunities, I would have to say my international conference to Switzerland with some amazing students was an experience I will never forget.
