Sounds-Write for reading and writing in Early Learning

Since 2020, our School has integrated the evidence-based phonics program Sounds-Write into our early childhood education curriculum. Sounds-Write focuses on enhancing reading, spelling, and writing outcomes for students while supporting teaching staff in developing their skills and knowledge.

The decision to implement this program followed research into best practices and successful programs utilised by other schools and education systems.

“We consistently review and assess the educational programs we introduce in our classrooms to ensure adherence to best practices,” explains the Head of Primary, Mr Whirledge. “Sounds-Write, with its evidence-based approach, has been widely adopted by educators across Australia and the UK for two decades.”

Since its inception, several primary staff members have participated in professional development opportunities provided by Sounds-Write. Over the past four years, the School has fostered strong relationships with Sounds-Write and its trainers, hosting two professional development sessions this year – one in January and one during the April school holidays. Conducting these sessions on our campus in the South West has not only benefited our staff but also educators throughout the South West.

“Our close rapport with the Sounds-Write team has allowed us to host these recent professional development opportunities,” Mr. Whirledge adds. “We were also fortunate to welcome Mr John Walker, Founder and CEO, and Ms Tita Beavan, Director of e-learning and Innovation, from Sounds-Write in the UK. They spent valuable time in our classrooms providing feedback to our teaching staff in 2023.”

Additionally, Ms Maureen McDaniel, another Sounds-Write trainer, visited the School and collaborated directly with Pre-primary, Year 1, and Year 2 teachers during Term 1 this year.

“The support of the directors and trainers, working directly with our teachers in their classrooms has been immensely beneficial,” remarks Mr. Whirledge. “Their guidance has bolstered the confidence of our staff in delivering lessons effectively, and our guests have observed firsthand how teachers can implement this program with fidelity.”
