As we reflect on a dynamic year, it is evident that Round Square has been a catalyst for remarkable growth among our students. Through the guiding IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service, Round Square has fostered a spirit of curiosity, confidence, humility, and optimism that has deeply enriched students experiences and shaped their character. More than just a program, Round Square is a powerful journey of self-discovery, resilience, and community-building.
Our students have not only gained the readiness to take on challenging projects but have also developed a profound commitment to understanding themselves and the world around them. This year, Round Square activities have helped them cultivate self-awareness, pursue personal excellence, and build invaluable interpersonal skills, setting them on a path toward meaningful and responsible citizenship. A key example of this is our student participation in the EatUp sandwich-making sessions, where they assembled over 900 sandwiches for local Primary schools each term, making a tangible impact on the community.
One of the year’s highlights was the Round Square International Conference in Bogotá, Colombia, where BCGS students and staff represented our school on a global stage. Their journey began with a pre-conference tour in Madrid, Spain, where students and staff immersed themselves in vibrant cultural experiences. They marvelled at the majestic La Almudena Cathedral, explored the Royal Palace, and admired Segovia’s ancient Roman aqueduct. The group continued to the historic towns of Ávila and Toledo, witnessing the seamless blend of Spain’s historical richness and modern vibrancy.
In Bogotá, students joined peers from around the world for a week of exploration, dialogue, and cultural exchange. Hosted by local families, they gained a unique perspective on Colombian hospitality and culture. In Boyacá, conference sessions and outdoor activities sparked new friendships and encouraged students to push their boundaries. As student delegate Stella Commisso reflected, “I learned so much about myself, my strengths, and my resilience. I connected with students from around the globe and gained insights into their cultures and perspectives. The pre-conference tour in Madrid and the entire experience are memories I’ll cherish forever”. The conference was transformative, leaving students more self-assured, globally aware, and eager to apply their insights back home.
Our students also participated in the Rockhampton Conference in Queensland, an opportunity for Year 8 and 9 students to explore environmental conservation and adventure. Xavier Armstrong described the experience as “an exciting six days” of activities like kayaking on Water Park Creek and snorkelling around Great Keppel Island. This conference emphasised environmental stewardship, with students forming lasting friendships as they connected with peers from across the region.
In addition to these conferences, our students took part in national and international exchanges with Round Square schools across Australia and in countries such as India, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK. These exchanges exposed students to new environments, strengthening adaptability, building friendships, and deepening global understanding.
Our younger students also embraced the Round Square spirit. Primary students marked their sixth year of tree planting at Ludlow Tuart Forest, cared for animals as part of their garden register duties, and contributed to various Round Square Award initiatives. Projects included a sports shoe collection drive, plastic bottle top recycling, and community service projects like beach cleanups and park maintenance.
This year’s journey with Round Square has been a testament to our students’ growing sense of purpose, empathy, and collaboration. Their dedication to service, learning, and character-building has been inspiring. As we close this chapter, we look forward to another year of opportunities for growth, connection, and positive impact.
