Robotics on the Rise!

It was a big weekend for the six Primary and two Secondary Robotics Club teams when we headed up to Newman College to compete at the RoboCup Junior competition in late August. For the Primary students, this was their first taste of a Robotics competition. Some of the teams were faced with multiple technical difficulties that required them to work together to find the problem and a solution. Two of the Primary teams improved with each run and scraped into the finals. Both Secondary teams were very competitive on the first day and made it through to the finals with ease.
Day two of the competition was intense. The two Primary teams were challenged, but continued to go from strength to strength and finished in the very respectable positions of 6th and 8th place. One of the Secondary teams decided to rebuild their robot on the day and the other had problems with their sensors, but both managed some solid runs and learned some valuable lessons for next year.

Special thanks to the parents for driving the students up to Perth and providing support and coffee, as well as to Vinnie for making the team shirts!

After the excitement of RoboCup Junior, the Robotics Club students have not lost their passion and continue to arrive each week eager to modify and code their robots ready to face the next challenge. We all look forward to more robot adventures next year.

My experience RoboCup 2024 was great. We got to see other teams amazing robots and learned how to self-critique and iterate on our design. It was a great experience, talking to the other competitors, seeing their ideas, and gaining a new perspective to the work that can go into such simple things and the tools we take for granted. If anybody would like to come along and have a try, why not? Come and join! I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the club and would love to compete next year :: Ethan

The RoboCup was a very enjoyable experience. We worked to overcome challenges, solved problems and put in a lot of effort. We learned a lot from it and hope to improve next time :: Ollie
Robotics is really fun because we get to make all sorts of stuff. Hal and I made a solar system for our learning journey, and it is really cool. RoboCup was a tough but fun challenge. I hope my team can get into the finals next year :: Meha

RoboCup was really cool. It was hard work, but I was so happy that I could just wear socks on the competition floor while I was competing. Our robot had issues but we sorted them, mostly, and did okay in the end :: Kian

RoboCup was really fun and challenging. We learnt to persevere and that we should never give up because it is worth it in the end. My team was not doing well but we ended up coming in 6th place! :: Hal
