In 2021, our youngest and oldest Science students in Secondary reflect on what they enjoy most about studying Science, and what they are looking forward to in the future.
My favourite parts of Science are when I learn something new, when I can create and explore things, and most importantly, when I get to discover things. I am looking forward to learning about genes and DNA later in high school. :: Thomas Talbot (Year 7)
I have really enjoyed learning Science in Secondary School so far. Learning about the planets in the Solar System and creating my own fictional animal in Biology has been so interesting. I also really liked using the Bunsen burners. In the future I am looking forward to learning a lot more. :: Toby Potter (Year 7)
My favourite parts about Science this year were learning about the Bunsen burners, separating techniques and the imaginary animal assignment. My teacher, Dr Williams, has also made everything fun and I want to thank her for getting me into Science. I am looking forward to Physics and Chemistry in the future because I am hoping for some cool practical experiments. :: Leeuwin Prowse (Year 7)
I am glad that in the earlier years of Secondary School I was given the opportunity to try all of the different branches of Science to see where my passions lie. Chemistry and Physics are my favourite areas: sometimes they are a logical puzzle where the pieces slot together and make sense, while at other times we have to actively challenge our own thinking and how we view the world. Learning about Science has taught me, ironically, how much I do not know. Every day, I am oblivious to much of the events and processes that occur around me but Science has given me the tools and opportunities to change that. I am now on a path in life that means I will never stop learning about, or being interested in, the world around me. :: Henry Openshaw (Year 12)
Science for me was a very easy subject to be interested in, as there are constantly new things to learn. From learning about sound and light in Year 9 to learning about the evolution of humans, organic chemistry and biotechnology in Year 12, Science has always fascinated me and has broadened my understanding of many real world problems. Over Year 11 and 12 in particular, I have really enjoyed learning about human anatomy and how the body functions, and this has sparked my interest to continue on a future pathway into a medical field. :: Callum Watts (Year 12)
Science has always been my favourite area of learning, and I think that is because of the experimental, hands-on nature of it. Name another subject where you would you be allowed to ditch eggs across the Quad? None! I also cannot write about Science at our School without mentioning the fantastic teachers. I am especially grateful to Mr and Mrs Cowan for teaching their beloved Physics and Biology, and igniting a passion in myself and so many other students. I had already decided a long time ago that I wanted to pursue a career in the health field. And while some of the things that I have learned – like special relativity – will no longer be relevant to me in the future, I have recently realised just how much of my acquired Science knowledge I will be needing in university. I am really thankful to have studied the subjects that I have. :: Olivia Pether (Year 12)
Since Year 7, I have accumulated a host of fond memories involving various Science-based learning activities; from simulating the movement of gaseous atoms by running hysterically around the Year 8 classroom, to Year 11 Biology camp where I had the opportunity to meet some adorable, furry marsupials whilst learning about a range of conservation strategies. I love Science for the way it has granted me a greater understanding of the intricacies associated with aspects of our daily lives that we so often disregard. Now in Year 12 studying Chemistry, Biology and Physics, I am hoping to continue my focus on Science beyond school by pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine. :: Tara Anderson (Year 12)
