Record Number of Students Achieve Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

In a remarkable achievement, four talented students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School – Isabella Bidesi, Julian Moore, Harry Wilson, and Matthew Zheng – have been awarded the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Their awards were presented during a memorable ceremony at Government House in late September, marking a historic moment for the school as it celebrates the largest group of Gold Award recipients in a single year.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader, Mrs. Roxanne Wilson, shared her pride in the program, emphasising its role in equipping students with vital life skills. “The Duke of Edinburgh Award helps students build independence, leadership, and resilience while giving back to their communities. It provides experiences and skills that are highly valued by employers and universities,” she said. Currently, more than 70 students from Years 9 to 12 are involved in the program.

The journeys these students embarked on were filled with diverse experiences, some quite challenging. Year 11 student Isabella found the adventure section to be particularly transformative. Initially hesitant about camping in the wilderness, she stepped out of her comfort zone and discovered a new love for nature. “I discovered that I am capable of thriving in unfamiliar environments and developed a real appreciation for nature,” she said.

For Year 12 student Matthew, the award opened doors to exciting challenges, including joining the Australian Air Force Cadets and hiking the stunning Cape-to-Cape Track, and he shared how these experiences broadened his horizons. “The award motivated me to explore new activities and take on adventures I never thought I would. It’s been an incredible journey that has pushed me in ways I didn’t expect,” he said.

Julian, also in Year 12, experienced significant personal growth through his leadership role while fulfilling his service hours by coaching rowing, and what started as an unexpected opportunity turned into a confidence-building experience. “The Duke of Ed helped me step into leadership positions I didn’t think I was ready for. Coaching rowing taught me so much about responsibility and teamwork,” he explained.

Year 12 student Harry went straight for Gold after completing his Bronze Award, igniting a new passion for adventure and travel. “I wasn’t sure if I fit the profile of a Gold Award student, but the program showed me that I can achieve more than I imagined. Traveling to New Zealand as part of the award sparked a love for adventure that I’ll carry with me,” he shared.

As the Duke of Edinburgh Award program continues to expand at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Mrs. Wilson believes this year’s success will inspire future participants. “These four students have set a wonderful example for others. Their achievements highlight what is possible when you commit to personal growth and challenge yourself to do more,” she said.

The school is excited to see many more students follow in their footsteps, embarking on their own enriching Duke of Edinburgh journeys!
