During the last week of Semester 1, students in Years 7 to 9 participated in Discovery Week, where they undertook a range of fun activities and projects in different learning areas!
In Science, students tackled problem solving and put their innovation skills to the test. Among the many projects, they created chemical reaction rocket cars using household materials, built earthquake-proof buildings using spaghetti and roller coasters crafted from paper. In Math, students explored the intricacies of Origami, built their own clinometers and used trigonometry to measure the heights of trees and buildings around the School. English students visited our School Archives and took inspiration from the history of our School to write short stories, poems and opinion pieces.
Our Art, Design and Technologies students collaborated on a project that incorporates the six Noongar Seasons with the six Round Square IDEALS. In Design, students researched the seasons and identified significant animals for each period, then used the laser cutter to create stencils and stamps of those animals. They were then given to both Food Tech and Art – in Food Tech, the stamps were imprinted on biscuits and decorated. Art students used the stencils to paint onto wooden letters that were made by Technologies students – they are not only a visual representation of the Noongar seasons, but also spell out the Round Square IDEALS!
Year 7 students had a special Outdoor Education session in the lead up to their upcoming Experiential Camp, where they learnt about setting up tents and cooking in the bush. Year 8 students also had a special Service Day, undertaking beach cleanups at Peppermint and Dalyellup Beach under the guidance of Year 12 student, Ruth. These sessions were highly successful, ridding the beach of rubbish such as glass, plastic (even a washing machine!) and allowing students to enjoy some beautiful winter weather. The Year 9’s spent a morning completing a scavenger hunt-type race around Bunbury, with students using orienteering skills they obtained during the week, navigating using compasses and solving puzzles.
Another successful and stimulating Discovery Week for everyone involved!
