A Season of Strength and Spirit: Girls Football Season Highlights

The 2024 season saw the introduction of a new football jersey at our School – the first time in many years. Charlotte, a Year 10 student designed the first BCGS Indigenous jersey. The girls wore the jersey during NAIDOC week and it was also worn proudly at Country Week this year. The girls continue to honour the original Buccaneers jersey but wear the Indigenous jersey on special occasions.
We played 15 games during the year and came away with six wins, one draw and eight losses and made it into the B Grade finals. We won our two elimination final matches and made it through to the Grand Final to play a strong Bunbury Bulldogs team on a warm September morning. Bunbury had six on the bench and we had no reserves, the girls battled hard but could not overcome the stronger team on the day. Therefore, we finished sixth out of 12 teams within the competition. A valiant effort for a team that was low on numbers during the year due to injuries and other factors.
We had five Year 10 girls at the beginning of the season, but due to the ‘play down’ rules, we could only field three of these on the field at any time. We also had three Year 7 girls playing up. Well done to the younger girls who trained and played with older girls.
A highlight for the year was playing against a strong Eaton team on a very wet weekend – we only had 11 players and had to borrow several players from Eaton. The ground was a muddy swimming pool and it was cold and windy. Thank you to the parents who braved the conditions and volunteered to stand in the rain! The expression on the girls faces as Charli kicked a winning goal with 20 seconds left on the clock and the celebrations in the mud afterwards, made the wet and cold conditions worth it.
The girls played a match against Mater Dei College during the year, the college has an AFL academy and therefore a number of very good players. We were very competitive and only lost by seven points in the end! It was a great match and we hope that Mater Dei College can return again next year.
We held the ‘Buccaneer-Low’ during the last week of Term 3 as our wind-up event. This replicated a Brownlow medal event and the girls all had a great time. The winners of our trophies for 2024 are below –

Rising Star: Sasha P
Most Improved: Ava C

Best Position: Charlotte G
Most Consistent: Kayla G
Runner-up Fairest and Best: Annie C

It was a great season, thankyou to David Cross for Team Managing and all the parents who volunteered to Ground Manage, Medic, taking photos and goal umpiring duties. I hope you have enjoyed watching your daughters develop skills, resilience and friendships throughout the year.
